Black Plague Brewing

This week on TIBS! we sat down with the fine gentlemen of Black Plague Brewing. We had a blast hanging out with Jordan Hoffart, Jared Doss, and Aeryk Heeg. We hit it off instantly and now we’re all buddies.

While the show progresses, and sampling of their products got deeper, we were impressed with the quality of their offerings. I believe it would be obvious to anyone that talks to these guys that their passion and drive to help BP excel are second to none. I often say authenticity matters, and this crew has it in spades.

I’m stoked they make clear AF beer, but, due to the world’s intent on irony, my favorite beer of the evening was Hazy Scandal. You’ll hear a few slips of my skate nerdness, there’s a great Esthela’s Cheves this week, and you’ll get to know a little bit about this Oceanside brewery.

Rye’d The Dragon at Savagewood!

Over here at TIBS!, we’ve been on a tremendous streak of good fortune! This week, well last month actually, we got the chance to collaborate with Savagewood Brewing on a fine crafted beverage.

The malts break down like this, 80% 2 row, 12% rye malt, and 8% flaked oats. We saved room in the kettle for a cold water addition after the boil, that dropped our whirlpool temp down to about 175 degrees, for 1.33lbs/BBL of Dragon hops to take a swim in. Then they let WLP067 do its job and added 2.66lbs/BBL of those same Dragon hops in dry hopage.

I think the beer turned out really good, but don’t take my word for it, get over there and try it for yourself! Yes, the limited cans have sold out but there’s still some available on drat for another week or so!

We had a blast recording a live show at the Rye’d The Dragon release party, we really enjoy getting to interact with our fans when we get the chance. Jawing, Drinking, Drink and Jaw

This week’s episode finds Esthela, Brandon and myself discussing some current beer happenings while drinking some amazing beers! This is what most of the craft beer / indie beer podcast world does and we love to do the same when we get the opportunity.

We dive into the recent Saturday Morning beer that got the crazy attention from the nation. If you noticed, your craft beer buddies were not surprised by this beer. Beers like this have been around for a long time and cereal beers have become boring/old hat to beer geeks everywhere.

We talk about Iron Fist’s first brewing schedule release, drink Freeskate from Resident Culture Brewing (Thanks BFF Vance!), Iron Fist Blood Orange IPA and Fresh Perspective (for the record, I did the actual math after the show and 500 cans is only 1.5 BBLs, so definitely a limited release), Blood Orange Family Tart from Bitter Brothers, Project 66 form Quantum, 11 IPA from Amplified, and Old Bro from Duck Foot. I might have even missed a few, when there’s “drink” in the title twice, things like that can happen.

Indie Beer Madness

Bitter Brothers Goes Low with Pacesetter

Bitter Brothers Brewery is the first San Diego , independent brewery to produce a low calorie beer. This trend is picking up steam and BB has a well timed innovation, that leverages the enzymes that are used in producing brut IPAs, to make a flavorful beer with just 2g of carbs, 95 calories, and coming in at a paltry 4% abv.

Beers for the health conscious drinker is a market that is exploding right now in craft. The biggest sign is Sierra Nevada’s purchase of Sufferfest. This is the first acquisition for the SN, that’s how strongly they feel about the potential growth in this space.

Tyler, the head brewer at Bitter Brothers, joins us on The Show to discuss Pacesetter as well as some of their other fine offerings. The beer quality at this brewery is at an all time high, if it’s been awhile since you’ve visited, you should go by soon!

I really enjoyed Pacesetter and wouldn’t hesitate to order it. It has a quality on the finish that makes you want to take another sip, and another, and you get the point! This is episode 24, if you’re keeping track, and it’s time to hit the play button!

San Diego Distillery

You’re about to listen to Episode 22! We’re getting rid of episode numbers in our show titles, so, moving forward, our titles will only focus on our guests or topic of The Show!

Trent and Maria were great hosts; they had Esthela and me out on a night they were not open. On this particular cold and rainy night, it was fun to have the entire facility to ourselves!

Yes, San Diego has several distilleries, if you were not aware, many are displaying similar zeal and creativity to distilling spirits that we’re conditioned to expect from our local brewers.

SD Distillery is a shining example of how, sometimes, the long term dedication to a passion project develops into a unique and respected business.

I walked away from this interview with two main thoughts. Maria and Trent’s love of distilling, aging, and blending is very obvious when in their company. Their use of indie beer as the wash for some of their distillation gives them a level of connection with the local beer industry that few will fully understand; getting the white into a barrel for aging is only the beginning, the aging and blending process can take years longer.

Episode 21: Gravity Heights

Almost exactly a year ago we did a preview show with the terrific humans behind Gravity Heights. On that show, they laid out an ambitious plan of building a ground up, elevated, brew pub experience. We were impressed with their intentions and design.

Fast forward a mere 12 months and they are now open and thriving! The place is freaking impressive, to say the least. We anticipated the beer under Skip Virgilio’s control would be stellar and he delivered in that department, big time. Especially for first batch beers, Gravity Heights offers a notable variety with quality that stands up to the striking build out.

The food, Brian, what about the food? Well, let me tell you, it’s exceptional as well. Get the blackened sichuan wings, you’ll thank me later.

We had a blast talking to the GH crew, yes, we discussed our “bet”, but overall we’re just stoked they’re open and delivering on their promise to bring something relevant to San Diego, which is no easy feat nowadays.
